The Ever Ready 1912 SE Razor

Anyone who's delved into The Shave Cave Journals recently will have seen my article on the GEM Micromatic Clog Pruf razor. In a sort of frenzy of vintage razor acquisition I immediately went back to eBay shortly after the GEM arrived and found an Ever Ready 1912 for a price that was so unbelievably reasonable - including packaging - that a) I snapped it up immediately and b) I can't even bring myself to tell you exactly how much it was*.

It arrived in a rather nice bakelite, Ever Ready case which you can see to the left. It contains two handy slots which you can keep blades in, which I have rather unhelpfully failed to photograph**. It may well be that those slots just happen to be the same size of the blades that fit into the razor itself, but that would be a massive coincidence***.

Look. Look at the razor. Look at the pretty razor sitting on top of the aforementioned bakelite case. As is often the case****, photographs - especially this one - simply cannot capture just how handsome this razor is. But aside from getting you to come round to my house to look at it***** I can't think of a better way to show it off.

Here are two more photographs that help to show it off a little further. Take a deep breath. You're about to fall hopelessly and helplessly in love.

Do you know what I think when I look at this razor? Do you? I think of two words. And those words are Victorian Cyberpunk. I also think of the word contraption, but in a good way. There's something elegantly terrifying about it. Had I not known better and done my research******, I would have assumed that the Ever Ready 1912 would serve me up a violently aggressive shave, concluding in a trip to my local Accident and Emergency department. But no. As long as you pay attention to angles and concentrate on what you're doing, the Ever Ready 1912 delivers a very smooth, very comfortable but very close shave which easily rivals my favourite DE razors.

If you're considering a departure into shaving with a single-edge razor I can heartily and thoroughly recommend the Ever Ready 1912, along with the GEM Micromatic Clog Pruf. You might even get an Ever Ready bakelite case to go with it*******.

* It was £13. Yes - £13. Including postage and packaging.

** If you really want to see a photograph of the inside of the bakelite case, I'll happily send you one. Email me.

*** Why am I making such a big deal about this? I'm making it sound far more important than it actually is. The case basically has two slots in it that would easily fit some blades. The fact that the blades themselves come in a handy holder/dispenser is neither here nor there. Whatever that means.

**** But not the bakelite one. I just wanted to make that quite clear. I promise I won't make any more references to Ever Ready bakelite cases in this article.

***** I'm not going to do that. That would be weird.

****** And my God did I do my research. I googled the hell out of the Ever Ready 1912. I YouTubed the arse off it. And, finally, I eBayed it until I was blue in the face. But the research paid off.

******* Oh. I lied.
